This badge can be used for the Star Award


 

  1. Produce a sketch map of 2 of the following:
    1. Hike Route
    2. Campsite
    3. Forest Trail
    4. Local Park
    5. Housing Estate
    6. Stretch of river
  2. Do one of:
    1. By carefull observation and notes of barings and distances, make a map using a compass of a area 50m x 50 m of forest track,river bank or another area chosen by your examiner. Use pacing to estimate distance and triangulate enough barings to establish key points and features on the map.
    2. Make an accurate map of a campsite... using plane table triangulation method and careful observations
  3. Draw a cross-section of a hike route chosen by your examiner, from a 1:50000 scale map. The route should include various features including rivers and gradient. Explain and show how you would read contours and grid referances on a map.
  4. Identify at least 5 of the following from one or more 1:50000 scale maps.
    1. V chaped valley
    2. U shaped valley
    3. Corrie lake
    4. A cliff/steep ground
    5. A Historical site
    6. A Youth hostel
    7. A railway track
    8. Triangulation Station
  5. Find out more about the work on the ordnance survey office. What types of maps do they produce for hillwalkers, tourists and farmers.
